What is the Makara?
Makara is an ancient and mythical water creature, It’s a mythical sea creature that is usually described as a half terrestrial animal such as elephant, lion, monkey, crocodile, and deer in the frontal part of the organism whereas the other bottom half as an aquatic creature. Makara is equivalent to the Zodiac sign Capricorn. They were also represented as the protectors of the sea and water. They are also known as the god’s vahana (vehicle) of the river goddess Ganga, Narmada, and of the sea god Varuna. These creatures are the guardians of thresholds and temple entryways, protecting throne rooms and the entryway to the temples. These Makara’s are mostly sculptures structures are commonly found in the frontal gates and pillars of many Hindu and Buddhist Temples around Asian countries such as India and Sri Lanka.
